Do you ever wonder if you have what it takes?
Do you know someone who just CAN’T fail?
One of those coaches who, everything they do, just works?
First-time coach? Wins the league.
Has a team of mediocre players? Goes undefeated.
Kids execute perfectly? Parent love and adore him/her.
One of those coaches?
I do. I know several.
And honestly, they used to really bug me.
What was so special about them?
Why did everything they do turn to gold, but no matter how hard I hustled, I didn’t succeed?
What’s the secret?
I’ll tell you exactly what the secret is…
About 10 years ago, I read Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success and got really excited about it. My vision was to build a winning team, accumulate a pile of wins, and land in the coaching hall of fame – if there was such a thing for youth coaches.
And then I did what few people do.
I started a travel AAU program.
The only problem was, I still doubted myself.
I LOST every game!
Which just made me even more frustrated.
Then in 2014, I finally figured out the secret. I found out what successful coaches did that made their teams win.
…and that is when everything changed for me.
A few months later, I entered my team into a tournament. And we won the entire thing!
What was the difference?
Why did we start winning?
I got help!
I let my ego go and realized I wasn't the smartest coach on the court.
If you are a new coach or trying to figure out what to teach (or if you are even teaching the right thing), surround yourself with expert advise and coaches who have been through the process before.
Are you teaching the right thing?
How to create a winning team – the right way
My name is Bill Flitter. I am the founder of BasketballPracticePlans.com and the Coaching Youth Hoops podcast host.
Over the past 15 years, I’ve gone from zero winning seasons to having one of the most successful youth programs in the San Francisco Bay Area.
But it wasn’t always easy.
If I had a nickel for every time, I wondered if I was teaching the right thing, I would be a rich man!
Every blog post and podcast I read made everything sound so easy. They discussed drills, strategies, and tactics but know one put it all together in a comprehensive, easy-to-follow plan.
They never talked about the voice in their head.
No actionable takeaways.
No system I could follow.
Finally, after months and months of frustration, I said, “Screw it!”
The only way for me to figure it out was to experiment and learn the hard way.
So I started studying.
I interviewed coaches from winning programs.
I watched endless minutes of basketball videos.
I downloaded ebooks.
I spent thousands of dollars on videos.
I would piece together a strategy, try it and then measure the results. I repeated this process until I finally found a handful of strategies that worked REALLY well.
Now, years later, I’ve been able to train and coach hundreds of kids from 3rd grade to college, started a 3v3 league, provided game-ready practice plans to thousands of coaches worldwide, star in a TV commercial with Steph Curry, and coached winning high school programs.
I continue to refine the system even more by training coaches through the process.
Whatever you do, avoid these 5 things (when building a winner team)
There are 5 things you must avoid when building a winning team and coaching youth.
I constantly see coaches making these 5 mistakes that derail them and crush their chances of success.
On my journey from 0 to undated seasons, I encountered each one of these and was able to beat them. You will face each one of them on your journey. But you HAVE TO OVERCOME them if you’re going to reach your goal of becoming a winning coach.
Relying solely on stuff you learn in blog posts and YouTube Videos
Most “experts” give you tons of drills and show you what was successful with college and NBA teams. You end up with a Frankenstein plan that doesn’t map to the IQ of your team nor properly progress them throughout the season.
As coaches, we know that’s a silly way to do things.
It might plug an immediate need, but it’s completely ignorant of where your kids are at today.
One of the biggest problems I see us making is swinging to the other end of the spectrum.
Stay away from the extremes
We think having just one practice a week or I’m just coaching 4th grade not an NBA team to mean “You don’t need a plan; you can figure out everything as you go.”
This is just as silly.
Deriving 100% of your strategy and coaching acumen from blog posts and videos is like becoming a doctor by reading WebMD articles.
There is a better way. A more efficient and thorough way to learn what you need to know.
You HAVE to have a guide.
Not knowing how to create a practice plan
Now that you have a list of drills, what do you do with it?
You’d be shocked at how many times this happens.
A coach spends months collecting a solid list of drills, and then?
Their team doesn’t improve.
Instead of understanding what exactly their players need, and having a progression plan, players flounder, and the coach gets frustrated.
The truth is, you don’t need hundreds of drills to create a winning team.
Today, my practice plans have just a handful of the right drills.
Which leads us to mistake #3.
You don't need to know everything
You don’t need to know everything. You just need to know more and stay ahead of the knowledge of those you are coaching.
The value you bring isn’t the library of drills. Kids and parents today all have access to the same material you do.
You have to be an expert at putting together the RIGHT puzzle pieces.
Focusing on the wrong things
Every new offense that comes out will be more “popular” than the next.
Read & React
Each one works. It’s not the offense or defense that turns your team into an unstoppable force. Remember everyone has access to the same material.
But the truth is this…
Nothing even comes close to the confidence you have in yourself knowing you are teaching the right thing.
Trying to do everything by yourself
One common problem is thinking you can do everything by yourself.
Reading blog posts?
Listening to podcasts?
Reverse-engineering what other people are doing?
That stuff will only take you so far.
You need more.
You need accountability and direction from someone who has been where you are trying to go.
Someone to hold your hand, push you when needed, encourage you when needed, and hold you ACCOUNTABLE.
Who is helping you?
Who is holding you accountable?
Your answers to these questions are VITAL to reaching your goal.
That’s why I’ve put together the most comprehensive youth coaching library to help you overcome each of these mistakes and make it nearly impossible for you to fail – as I did for years.
Winning Ways isn’t just a random set of drills. I’ve taken years of reading pdfs and blog posts, watching endless videos, and conducting hours of interviews with successful coaches, and compiled it all into one place.
All the strategies and materials have been tested. I have not included anything I haven’t used myself.
I’m making it available to you for the first time.
And I’ll provide the accountability and support, we all need in our journey as a coach.
This library is grounded in proven principles and strategies that work. It’s organized into skills, the 4 phases of the game (Transition to Offense, Offense, Transition to Defense, Defense), and Team Management.
No more guesswork. No more endless hours of scouring the internet for the perfect drill. NO MORE doubting whether or not your teaching the right thing.
Plus, you still have the flexibility to assemble the pieces that best fit your team.
No reverse engineering.
No more Googling.
Just access the library.
